The feast of Our Lady of Knock on August 21 celebrates the apparition of the Virgin Mary alongside St. It is on 17 August, rather than the 21st, because of the timing of existing feast-days. The Marian apparitions at Knock in the west of Ireland occurred on 21 August 1879, and were investigated in depth in 18.ĭespite this timeframe, there do not seem to have been any particular hymns associated with the devotion until the mid/late 20th century, when Dana (Rosemary Scallon) popularised "Our Lady of Knock" a hymn written by her family.Ī specific memorial was added to the liturgical calendar from 2012. Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.Ī small selection of hymns which are still subject to copyright may also be included, if they are particularly appropriate. Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), meanig the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - although sometimes in a limited setting.
